Be the Me God wants me to Be!
(Reference: SOUL PRINT by Mark Batterson)
You need to be yourself and the ”me God wants me to be.” Too many times we look at others and become jealous. Let me tell you something—we ALL have issues! Each of us has unique strengths and unique weaknesses. In the history of the world, no one has ever had your fingerprint. You are NOT an accident. God tells us in the Psalms: “We are fearfully and wonderfully made.” God loves His special creation—man and woman. You can worship God in a way no one else can. In this case, worship refers to honoring God with the gifts He has given you, to the people he puts in your life, as only you can.
Psalm 139:16
“All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
Embrace each new day! It is the ONLY ‘this day’ that will ever be! To use a quote from a Sprite can, “Another Day, Another Adventure!”
You are important. You are very important! You are the only you that God will ever create!
Be the you He wants you to be!

Are You For Real?
"Are you for real?" is an introspective question I am asking myself. I encourage you to read this blog in a personally-questioning way.
As I seek out the real me, I have to consider all the personas that I would like to portray. If I am being honest with myself, I have different personas for different people. I have different personas for different roles. Taking it one step deeper, I am not always honest with God. Finally, I confess that I even try to fool myself sometimes.
I am not suggesting that I have multiple personalities at all. However, I believe that-sometimes-I act differently according to the situation. Perhaps talk differently. My deep desire is to keep it real ALL the time. But, that ain't happening.
Let's explore more...
If I am around highly-educated people, I wish to speak correctly. There's nothing wrong with that. As a matter of fact, I need to speak correctly all the time--with a few minor exceptions.
If I am at church, I certainly don't want to look like someone who is a sinner. someone who doesn't have it all together....Then I remember Jesus' words--I looked up Mark 2:17 (NLT) to get them right. When Jesus heard this, he told them, "Healthy people don't need a doctor--sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners."
Then there is the prideful part of me which always wants to be right. I really don't like people telling me I am wrong. I want it done my way. when I want it. I mean, can't people see that I am right? I've been around you know--57 years. Huh!
The Bible speaks much about pride. Here's one that hits home....
Matthew 23:12 (NLT) But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Other times, I need someone to encourage me. Thank God for placing those encouragers in my life at the right time. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
I don't want to be a worry wart, and I don't want to be a scardie-cat. So, I claim the following verses.
Philippians 4:6 (NLT) Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
This did not go as I planned....As I searched out the "true me", I was led to the scriptures. The final realization is: I am a work in progress. But, I must fight spiritually by praying, being in the word, going to church, and seeking God. I must allow God to change me to be the me He wants me to be.
2 Corinthians 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Some Psalms
Here are some verses from Psalms that God has used to strengthen, teach, convict, or enlightenment me in my recent studies. All scripture shown is from the NLT version of the Bible.
Psalm 1:1-3; 1. Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. 3. They are like trees planted along the river bank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
Psalm 3:3; But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.
Psalm 7:17; I will thank the Lord because he is just; I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.
Psalm 8:1-5; 1. O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. 2. You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you. 3. When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers--the moon and stars you set in place--4. What are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? 5. Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.
Psalm 13:3; Turn and answer me, O Lord my God! Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die.
Psalm 13:6; I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.

For Us
I am thankful that it is Thanksgiving Week!
As I ponder this wonderful holiday, I am reminded just how thankful I should be, and how thankful I am not. I am thankful for another chance to do better!
First, I am thankful for the scriptures God has given us. If you do not believe in the validity of the scriptures, the rest of this may be of no interest to you.
I believe God indeed created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them! He did this for his good pleasure. (Genesis 1:31 NLT) "Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day."
Next, God has given me a new way to look at being thankful. As I thought of the words to the song, Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart, I remembered the line: Because of what the Lord has done for us. And it hit me....FOR US.
Allow me to list some of what God has done for us. (All verse are from the NLT version.)
1. Salvation of everyone who is willing. John 3:17; "God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him."
2. A rich and satisfying life. John 10:10; Jesus said, "The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life."
3. Family. Exodus 20:12; "Honor your father and mother. Then you will have a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you."
4. Health. Isaiah 53:5; "But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed."
5. Fun. (John 10:10)
6. Food and clothes. Matthew 6:31-33; Jesus said, 31. "So don't worry about these things, saying, 'What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?' 32. These thoughts dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but you heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."
7. Beauty of the earth. A contemplation: Have you ever been snow skiing and felt closer to God? Watched the leaves turn an array of colors in the Fall and be in utter wonder? use the talents God has given you and be on cloud 9? I believe God wants to share his beautiful creation with us. It gives him great joy. I believe he wants us to share the talents he has given us. It gives joy to us, others, and God.
8. A wrap of everything. James 1:17; "Whatever is good and perfect is a gift from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow."

Lessons from Matthew; Part 7; Conclusion: "WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?"
Matthew 27
v 9 This fulfilled the thirty pieces of silver--the price at which he was valued by the people of Israel, and purchased the potter's field, as the Lord directed.
v 22 Pilate responded, "Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?"
v26 So Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a led-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to crucify.
v35a After they had nailed him to the cross....
v42a "He saved others," they scoffed, "but he can't save himself."
v50 Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit.
v51 At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
Matthew 28
v1a Early on Sunday morning (first day of the week) as the new day was dawning...
v2 Suddenly there was an earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it.
v5 Then the angel spoke to the women. "Don't be afraid!" he said "I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified....He is risen from the dead!"
v13 (Jewish Leaders) They told the soldiers, "You must say Jesus' disciples came during the night while we were sleeping and they stole his body."
v18 (in Galilee) Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given authority in heaven and on earth.
v19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
v20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
My Take:
1. It is absurd that Jesus, the One whom all things on Earth were created through, was valued at thirty pieces of silver. Lesson: When people try to put a "low price" on you, they did the same thing to Jesus. Ignore them.
2. Jesus was flogged with a led-tip whip. We are told in Isiah: By His stripes, we are healed. Thus fulfilling the prophecy.
3. Jesus was nailed to a cross.
4. He was scoffed at.
5. Jesus released his spirit, and died. He had the ability to give up his life--when he wanted to.
6. Then the curtain that separated the holiness of God from man was torn in two--from top to bottom. Jesus had bridged that separation!!
7. The first day of the week became the Christians sabbath due to the resurrection of Jesus.
8. Drama! An earthquake, a stone getting rolled away, and an angel sitting on top!!
The angel told the women--who were the first to seek to take care of Jesus after the Jewish Sabbath--Jesus has risen!!!
9. Right away, the Jewish Leaders try to dispute the Resurrection.
10. Jesus appeared to his disciples.
11. He told them to go. make disciples. baptize them. teach all he had commanded.
12. Jesus will always be with His followers!
***That leaves only 1 question for you and me. It is the one Jesus asked His disciples a few days earlier: WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?!***

Lessons from Matthew; Part 6
Chapter 24
v. 27 Just as the lighting flashes in the east and shines in the west, so will it be when the Son of Man comes.
v. 36 However, no-one knows the day or the hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.
v. 42 So you, too must keep watch! For you don't know what day the Lord is coming!
v. 44 You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.
Matthew 25
v. 21 The Master was full of praise. "Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you more responsibilities."
v. 40 And the King will say, "I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you were doing it to me."
Matthew 26
v. 2 (Jesus) As you know, Passover begins in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.
v. 7 While he (Jesus) was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of perfume and poured it over his head.
v. 13 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman's deed will be remembered and discussed.
v. 26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to his disciples saying, 'Take this and eat it, for this is my body.'
v. 27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, 'Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.'
v. 39 He went a little further and bowed with his face to the ground, praying : My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.
My Take
Jesus tells us how he will return.
We do not know when he will return, must we must stay ready. Our lives should reflect this readiness.
When we help the ones that are the least, we help Jesus. Which brings the question, "Who is the least?" Since we are not to judge, I believe we should help EVERYBODY! I have a loooong way to go. God, help me!
Jesus predicts his own death.
The act of the woman who poured the expensive perfume over Jesus' head is so important, her deed will be told wherever the Good News is preached. I wonder the reason. Could it be she gave all she had? Could it be she was obedient to God? Could it be she prepared Jesus' body for burial? Could it be for another reason?
Jesus explains Communion and its significance. The breaking of Jesus' body and the blood pouring from his body is the New Covenant between God and people. Now, people other than Jews can be saved in our belief in Jesus.
Jesus prayed tremendously hard! He knew what awaited him. In the end, he said 'yes' to God and 'yes' for us! THANK YOU, LORD JESUS FOR SAYING YES!!!

Lessons from Matthew; Part 5
Matthew 20
v. 16 So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.
v. 27 And whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave.
Matthew 21; Jesus' Triumphant Entry
v. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it.
v. 8 Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and cut branches from trees and spread them across the road.
Matthew 22
v. 22 His reply amazed them, and they went away.
v. 33 When the crowds heard him, they were astounded at his teachings.
Matthew 23
v. 12 But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
v. 23 ...justice, mercy, and faith...you should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.
v. 24 Blind guides! You strain your water so you won't accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel!
v 28 speaks of inside is hypocrisy and lawlessness
v. Jesus, speaking of Jerusalem, wanted to...as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me.
v. 39 ...blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
My Take:
Jesus is Lord! He fulfilled the scripture concerning the Messiah.
Jesus taught us how to live. We need to be humble. We should worship Jesus as God.
Let us be amazed and astounded at the teachings of Jesus!
Let us seek to show: justice, mercy, and faith!
Our teachers of God's Word, our pastors, and others should be blessed if they come in the name of the Lord.
v. 16 So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.
v. 27 And whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave.

v. 23 ...justice, mercy, and faith...you should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.

Lessons from Matthew Part 4; Am I Listening?
Prelude: James 1:19; Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.
With this directive from God, let it serve as the backdrop for the following lessons from Matthew.
Matthew 16:26a; And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your soul?
How much time, money, focus, and effort to we spend on things of this world? If we are not careful, we will seek to win something of this world. God has called us to seek Him first. to love Him above all else. to keep our focus on Him.
So why do we live like we do as garden variety American Christians? Let's refocus on God and not the world.
Matthew 17:26b; ...if you have the faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, move from here to there and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.
Let me recommend the book Mead Mountain by B K Del. It might give you a fresh look at this verse.
Matthew 18:12; If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won't he leave the ninety-nine others on the hill and go out to search for the one that is lost.
I need no other illustration of God's love for me. just me. and just you!
Matthew 19:25; The disciples were astounded. "Then who in the world can be saved?" they asked.
Matthew 19:26; Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.
Am I listening? It is not the church! It is not the preacher! It is not the type of songs at Worship!
It is God and God alone who saves!!

Lessons from Matthew Part 3; Are You a Water-Walker?
Matthew 14 and 15 certainly challenges us to have faith over fear, with the most dramatic part of Peter walking on the water after he saw Jesus being a water-walker.
The underlining faith question is do we believe God's word. This is applicable today as it was 2000 years ago. With that said, I direct your attention to Jesus' answer of what to do about feeding the 5000 ((men) I predict there were about 12,000 to 15,000 people in all, which is easily the size of Vidalia.)
In Matthew 14:16, Jesus tells the disciples, "You feed them." This is a major call to faith. I wonder if they even considered Jesus' response. But there was a dab of consideration.
Matthew 14:17 reads But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish. Hmmm. If the disciples were thinking earthly, this statement would not have been made. I mean, that might feed 5....Nah, not even 5! But 5000?!
Lesson 1; God uses what we have. Matthew 14:18; Jesus says, "Bring them here." He went on to bless the food, feed the 5,000 (or 12,000 to 15,000). There were 12 baskets left over.
So, what little do you have that God can use? That He can multiply? That He can miraclize?
Seven verses later, Matthew 14:25, About 3 AM, Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.
Peter sees the Water-Walker and he wants to become one! (Matt 14:28)
Sure enough in verse 29, Peter walked on the water! Uh oh! Verse 30; But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. "Save me, Lord!" he shouted. Verse 31; Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. "You have so little faith," Jesus said. "Why did you doubt me?"
Lesson 2; Keep our eyes on Jesus and not the strong winds and waves! Have complete faith in Jesus. Wow! Peter is a water-walker! That took a lot of faith! There are just a few times that I have had water-walking faith. But, when I did, there was NO doubting God! What happened to make Peter sink? He allowed himself to become afraid because he trusted the power of the wind and waves more than the power of Jesus? Have you ever done that? You are not alone. However, Jesus calls us to have water-walking faith---trust God more than His creation!!
Chapter 15 reveals a lady of great faith! of persistent faith!
Matthew 15:27; She replied, "That's true Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fell beneath their master's table."
Matthew 15:28; "Dear woman," Jesus said to her, "Your faith is great. Your request is granted." And instantly her daughter was healed.
Lesson 3; Have humble but persistent faith! This woman would not let it go! We should also continue to seek God as she did.
One chapter later from the question of how to feed the 5,000, the disciples are faced with almost the same dilemma.
Matthew 34-38 There are 4,000 (men) to feed. What should they do? They produce seven loaves and a few fish. Jesus blesses the food and feeds them all!
Lesson 4; When Jesus teaches you a lesson, be a learner and faithful follower.
How can I have this water-walking, willing to give what I have, humble and persistent, good-learner and faithful follower...type of faith?!
We must allow God to change our hearts. After Jesus was questioned about His disciples not following the age-old tradition of washing their hands, here are key elements of His response.
Matthew 15:18; These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
Matthew 15:19; Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.
Matthew 15:16; "Don't you understand yet?" Jesus asked. 17. Anything you eat, passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. 18. But the words you speak come from the heart--that's what defiles you. 19. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. 20. These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you."
Lesson 5; Obey God over People If you are faced with a conflict of God's command and a person's command, always go with God. No matter the cost! God will provide for you!!

Lessons from Matthew; Part 2; The Kingdom of Heaven
In Matthew, Chapter 13, Jesus illustrates the tremendous importance of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Illustration 1
Verse 22 is part of the Parable of the Farmer sowing Seeds.
"The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God's Word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced."
* I fight being a worry wart! God does not approve of worrying. As a matter of fact, our faith in God can be wrecked if we allow worry to be our god.
* So often many of us think if we could get a large sum of cash, we would be set for life. I think this speaks to the inward struggle of we being in control or allowing God to be in control.
We must desire God above all else, and we must obey Him. Lord, have mercy and help me!!
Illustration 2
Verse 44
"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field."
* Let us be sold-out Christians to our Lord Jesus!
Illustration 3
Verse 31
"Here is another illustration Jesus used: The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches."
* First, don't ignore the small requests God makes of us. Big stuff can happen!
* Next, let us not look down on anyone! The people society deems as small, may be God's giants!

'86
Last Saturday, Kentucky defeated Florida in a football game for the first time since 1986! This got me to thinking about the state of the world in '86.
The World
* The Soviet Union was 5 years away from dissolving.
* The Berlin Wall was still there!
The Nation
* Reagan was president.
* We were in the middle of a decade that saw no war or depression for the USA. This would be the only such decade from the first decade of the 20th century through today.
The State
* The Braves were still terrible.
* The Hawks were good.
* The Falcons had a great start, only to end average.
* Georgia Southern was about to win its second 1AA National Title
* Georgia was feeling the post-Hershel years. Vince was about to hang up his coaching shoes.
Me
* I was still preparing to be a teacher.
* I was yet to coach a VRD All-Star Softball Team, a VHS Sport, or a JRT Sport
* I was living in my seventh residence of the decade, Brookington Apartments
What do you remember about that time period?

Lesson from Matthew; Part 1
My last blog spoke of fighting doubts about the Christian faith. It certainly is worth the fight! God wants us to trust him, obey him, and love him. I believe we must continually seek God. Seek his face. Seek his will. Seek his love. Seek his presence.
We doubt-fighters have a famous teammate, found in Matthew 11. His name is John the Baptist.
In verse 3...While in prison, John sent his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you the Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?"
This trips me out! Earlier, John declared that Jesus was the Lamb of God! He yelled it. I believe he was sure of it because God, the Father had revealed it to him. So how could he doubt.
Then, I see my spiritual reflection in the mirror. After God has saved me. Baptized me with his Holy Spirit. Healed me. Allowed me to know his sweet presence. Fought spiritual battles for me. Given me joy! Used me to witness for him. I still sometimes fight doubts. How can it be?!
As we look at verse 4, Jesus utters these words to John's disciples. This is a message to John. He may have texted him if it were our day. "...tell him--the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor."
I believe John received these words prayerfully. With his knowledge of the Old Testament, John had to know this was the affirmation he sought. Maybe he was afraid in that prison and he needed these words to encourage his withering faith.
Related lessons from Matthew 11...
Verse 19: But wisdom is shown to be right by its results.
Verse 20: We need to repent and turn to God. (God's message that John preached.)
Verse 25...revealed these thing to the childlike
Verse 28: Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Hopefully, Jesus' words gave John rest, because he would never leave that prison.)
Verse 29: Jesus said, "I am humble and gentle in soul." (As we seek God, I charge us to remember this.)
GLORY be to God!!! He has made us a little lower than the angels! He has put us in charge of all creation. O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! (Psalm 8)

I Do Believe Help me Overcome my Unbelief
I Do Believe, but Help me Overcome my Unbelief
Background: In my older years, I have fought unbelief. Maybe you have. Hopefully, this lesson will motivate us to allow God to help us!
Point 1; We must have FAITH to please God.
Hebrews 11:1 Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
Hebrews 11:6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.
Point 2; God is our source of faith.
Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.
Romans 12:2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy waiting Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
Point 3; We must choose to believe God and the validity of His word.
From the Parable of the Farmer Scattering the Seed:
Mark 4:20 And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear and accept God’s word and produce a harvest of 30, 60, or even 100 times as much planted.
In the past, the words in this passage that stood out to me were “good soil.” In the last few days, the words that have stood out are “hear and accept God’s word.” It is our choice!
2 Timothy 3:6 All scripture is inspired by God and useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong with our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
2 Timothy 3:7 God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work.
Point 4; Possible lies we may encounter
Lie #1: How can all other religions be wrong? As a 40-something-year-old, I contemplated this question as I led my middle-grade students in studies of other religions.
Truth: John 14:6 Jesus told him (Thomas), “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the father except through me.”
Lie #2: Since I am born in the Bible Belt, maybe I would believe differently if I was born somewhere else. I can’t really be that fortunate…Can I?
Background: God recently revealed to me the plight of the Israelites. I have often wondered the reason for them picking up other religions from neighboring nations.
Lie #2 Israelite Style: Maybe, they were fed a similar line: We aren’t really God’s chosen people. We could not be this fortunate…Could we?
Truth: Deuteronomy 7:6 For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be His own special treasure.
Point 5; How can I gain faith and kill doubts?
Lesson 1: Stay in God’s word.
Isaiah 55:10-11 v.10 The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. v.11 It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
Lesson 2: Our heart can fool us, but God’s word is always our perfect guide.
Proverbs 3:5-6 v.5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. v.6 Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.
Lesson 3: Keep our eyes on Jesus and not on ourself or the world.
Romans 12:2 (See above.)

Freedom is NOT free!
I would point my finger at others about this topic, but I would have 3 fingers pointing back at myself! The older I get, the more I understand that we are spoiled in America!! We are given a free education, which is bought by taxpayers. We are free to drive down roads and highways, which are patrolled by Law Enforcement Agents. We are free to choose a college to attend, where many students are given grants and financial aid, and low-interest loans. Many of us have been blessed with parents who have lavished gifts on us --from money for which someone worked. However, in America, multitudes of children do not have a plush home life.
We are free to worship, but the government must keep laws in place to allow this to happen. We are free to choose to play sports, but coaches, officials, parents, and volunteers are needed. We are free to pursue a career, but many jobs require education, good references, and self-sacrifice. We are free to treat people politely, but we must be humble. We are free to treat people rudely, but that costs hurt feelings. We are free to use our money in different ways, but there is a trade-off for everything we buy. We are free to purchase a home, but we must be in good standing with our credit, plus have collateral. We are free to join a civic club, choir, neighborhood club, etc., but it costs time and often money.
In America, freedom is usually not the problem. People are. Some children grow up in rough neighborhoods. Businesses sometimes fail because of greedy people. We may lose a friend because of pride. Our CHOICES can be life-altering. Upon self-reflection, how many people am I intentionally helping? Do I choose to be thankful or a complainer? Do I build people up or cut them down?
Glory, America is a place of freedom because of men and women who have volunteered to be a part of our armed-services. Wait! Was there a draft? Not since the Vietnam War! So, freedom is often wrapped in a choice, or choices, or generations of choices! We are sooooooo fortunate to live in the 21st Century in America. Technology has given us flushing toilets. A.C., computers, cell phones, and other dohickies. But, nothing replaces love. As I observe our country, we have traded freedom for hate. If we are to be truly free, we must work, live, and pray together!
Finally, the greatest freedom people are offered cost the highest price in history!
Jesus paid the highest price for our sins! He took our place on the cross! His sacrifice and Resurrection, 3 days later, allowed us to choose Eternal Life. A free gift. Paid with a high price.
I am taking God up on this free offer of life! Jesus is welcome to live in my heart! He is welcome to use me as a conduit of his love, but I am one selfish dude. I like to try to be in control. I am in constant need of forgiveness. I need daily Bible-study and prayer time. I need to go to church. God, HELPPPPPPP!! Praise God that prayers are free!

Choose to be Grateful
Last week, I had the pleasure of having lunch with a friend. She had recently returned from a year-long mission trip to Australia and Papua New Guinea. She loved the trip and God blessed her tremendously. However, things were tough.
This became apparent when we sat down, and she said, "Ice" enthusiastically.
I asked her, "You didn't have ice in New Guinea?"
"No." As a matter of fact, they had to filter their water daily--sometimes twice.
Talking about Conviction City! Major Call to Self: Shut you hon on the complaining!!
So, I have decided--and for sure, have asked God to help me--live in a State of Appreciation.
You may ask, "How's it Going?"
Well, I have a quick trigger to speak negatively when faced with adversity. After the initial reaction, I am doing better. But man, do I have a ways to go!
Thinking, praying, and living in a State of Appreciation for me would be comparable to a second grader.
I love that God gives us second chances! OK...4000 chances...and more!
I love that God challenges us!
I love that God is pulling for us to overcome!
I love that God is our biggest fan!

God, Trees, and Me
Have you ever heard the old saying, “I can’t see the forest for the trees”?
Which basically means you can’t see the entire situation because you’re are looking too closely at the details.
I want to flip the saying, “I can’t see the trees for the forest!”
Which basically means that the vast number of trees is so overwhelming, that all I can see is the entire situation.
Here is a story about a man named Joe. Follow along for his search for a tree.
Joe was seeking the Lord’s guidance for his life. God led Joe to a forest.
Joe closed his eyes and prayed, “Lord, all I see is a forest. Please open my spiritual eyes.”
When Joe opened his eyes, he shouted, “Hey! Trees! Thank you, Lord!”
As Joe continued to seek God’s plan, he was led to a tree.
It was a twenty-footer. It had a word written on it, but Joe had to back up to read it.
Joe mouthed the word FEAR.
God prompted Joe to cut down the tree.
Joe looked around for an axe. Instead, he found a sword. With one swing, he fell the tree. Immediately, Joe’s fear was gone!!
However, the Lord said, “Look at the stump. This means you will need to chop it again, if it grows.”
Joe said two VERY important words, “Yes, Lord.”
Then, God told Joe to go to the next to the last tree on the right side of the third row.
He began to look around as he found his way to the tree. Joe saw some weird scenes.
First, he saw a man hugging a tree.
“God, why is this man hugging that tree?”
God replied, “This man loves Me, but he refuses to leave the safety of this tree.”
Joe was amazed. “What will happened to him, Lord?”
God replied, “He will never grow spiritually until he trusts Me enough to let go of his comfortable place. His name is Complacent.”
Then, Joe saw another amazing scene. A lady was trying to chop down a tree with a toy hatchet.
“Lord, what is she doing?”
God replied, “This dear child of mine prays over and over, ‘Help me, Lord.’ But, she continues to try to chop down this tree on her own….with a toy. I could allow her to use my sword! Her name is In-My-Own-Strength.”
Suddenly, Joe was confused on which way to go. Then he remembered the verse everyone learned in his wonderful Sunday school class. Psalm 37:23; The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
So Joe prayed, “Lord, order my steps.”
Just then, it felt like someone was guiding him by the hand. Joe went around the trees, instead of through them. He quickly arrived at the next to the last tree on the right, in the third row.
When Joe looked at the tree, he shouted, “It’s me!!”
“It certainly is you.”
Joe saw what appeared to be an angel.
“Sir, are you an angel?”
The angelic creature said, “Yes, I am your guardian angel.”
Joe asked, “For how long?”
“30 years.”
Joe asked, “Why 30?”
The angel said, “That is when you were 7 years old. You asked Jesus into your heart on the last day of Vacation Bible School.”
“How did you know…. Hey, what’s your name?”
The angel said, “You can call me Bob.”
“Hmmm…OK. Why haven’t I seen you before?”
Bob explained, “When you were younger, you saw me. Your spiritual eyes were wide-open. I was right with you when you were a boy. Since you have gotten older, I still watch over you. Especially when you are about to get into trouble. Now you are spiritually near-sighted.”
Joe simply said, “Oh.”
Bob asked Joe, “What do you make of the tree?”
“Well, it’s a BIG me.”
“In your eyes.”
“You don’t see me?”
Bob explained, “Joe, no one sees you but you.”
Joe was getting irritated. “What do you see, Mr Smarty Angel?”
“I see a word….me.”
Joe asked, “You see Bob?”
“Joe, you are VERY selfish! That is the reason you see yourself.”
Joe managed, “This is not good.”
Bob asked, “Do you wanna know what you need to do?”
“Yes, Yes, Yes!!!!!!”
Bob said, “Pray.”
Joe began to pray, “Lord, help me see. While I’m thinking about it, Lord give me cool sunglasses to see this tree of me.”
Bob interrupted, “No, no, Joey Boy. If you want to erase you, and see God, you need to praise Him!!”
Joe thought for a moment. “Ok. God, I praise you for the rain. I praise you for my good health. I praise you for my kids, my church, my job, my golf clubs…”
Bob broke in, “Woe! Woe, kid!”
Joe was red faced (partly from frustration and partly from embarrassment). “What was wrong with that?”
Bob paused, “Joey Boy, there was nothing wrong with that, but who was the focus on?”
Joe thought for a moment, “Uhhh mostly me.” “Bingo! Slow down this time! In your heart, remember your God! Remember His Word! Remember summer camp and other times of closeness with your God! Pour out your love for Him. Can you do that Joe?”
Joe was a little unsure of himself. Then, he remembered the reason for being here. Joe was determined to put a stake in the ground for God! To say, YES GOD! He could do dis.
Joe told Bob, “I can do this!”
Joe prayed again, “God, You are God. I am man. I am a sinner, but you are holy. I am a taker, but you are a Giver! Praise you, Father for your creation. for your patience. for your love! Jesus, thank you for praying so hard in the Garden of Gethsemane that your sweat became like blood…but Jesus, you said YES! Praise you, Jesus for taking our sin upon yourself on the cross! Then, you rose to glory so that we could have life! Holy Spirit! Praise you that you are NOT a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!!! “
Joe opened up his eyes. He look around. Joe only saw a few trees, the stump from the tree he cut, and a beautiful pond.
Joe went back to his home—praising God the entire way!

SCRIPTURES FOR TODAY’S LESSON
Some people suffer from FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). A few weeks back, after I listened to Zach Williams sing Fear is a Liar, God revealed to me that I was suffering from FOWMH (Fear Of What Might Happen). Since that discovery, I have been more aware of the situation and God is helping me work through it.
I Timothy 1:7 (NLT) For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Matthew 6:33 (NLT) Seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
Proverbs 3:6 (NLT) Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.
Romans 8:28 (NLT) And we know God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Ephesians 6:14-17(NLT) Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God's righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Do prayers have the ability to influence God?
Do prayers have the ability to influence God?
ABSOLUTLEY!!
During Jesus time on Earth, people had requests for Him, thus these were prayers. Every time he performed a miracle, whether it was a healing, death-raising, turning water-to-wine, calming the raging sea, deliverance, forgiving of sins, or any other requests that Jesus answered, indeed influenced God. After all, Jesus was the Son of God!
There are also many times in scripture when people make requests for God to perform a certain action and he does it. Let's look at three.
1. A prayer influences God to change the weather.
James 5:16-18 (NLT) 16. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. 17. Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years. 18. Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.
2. A prayer influences God to send an angel.
Daniel 10:-12 (NLT) 10. Just then a hand touched me and lifted me, still trembling, to my hands and knees. 11. And the man said to me, "Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you." When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling. 12. Then he said, "Don't be afraid Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer."
NOTE: The "man" is identified as the angel Gabriel in Daniel 8:16-27.
3. A prayer influences God's decision to destroy a city.
* Note: All verses are from the NLT.
Genesis 18:20-21; 20. So the Lord told Abraham, "I have heard a great outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah, because their sin is so flagrant. 21. I am going down to see if their actions are as wicked as I have heard. If not, I want to know.
Genesis 18: 23-24; 23. Abraham approached him and said, "Will you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked? 24. Suppose you find fifty righteous people living there in the city--will you spare it for their sakes?"
Genesis 18:28 And the Lord replied, "If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake."
This conversation continues between Abraham and the Lord. Abraham lowers the numbers each time. He asked...If I find forty-five righteous people, will you destroy the whole city? The Lord says He would not destroy the city.
This continues with: forty, thirty, twenty, finally ten. Each time, the Lord heard the prayer and was influenced to not destroy the city due to Abraham's humble request.
Sadly, Abraham could not find ten righteous people. So, the Lord destroyed the city. Only Lot, his wife, and two daughters made it safely out of the city.
BUT, the Lord listened to Abraham and would have changed His decision to destroy the city--if ten righteous were found.
Finally, a personal witness. In the Spring of 1989, my uvula became swollen. It gave me some pain, especially when I tried to yell at the softball players I was coaching, Of course, I went to the doctor and they did not solve the problem. Later in the summer of 1989 (about four months of swelling), I went to a Carman Concert. (Carman was a popular Christian singer in the 80s and 90s.) Toward the end of the concert, Carman asked if anyone needed a healing to raise their hand. I immediately raised my hand. Something touched my throat and the swelling went down to 30% above normal. (I don't know if God gave me that number or I decided.) I claimed it as a healing. Within 3 weeks, my uvula was normal size with no pain. It has never given me that trouble again! Praise the Lord!
You----I am confident many people have influenced God by prayer. Praise God, he is not a genie or Santa Claus, but He is the Lord of Heaven's armies, yet He cares about each of us.
Psalm 37:23 (NLT) The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.

Don't be Scared!
Have you ever felt God was speaking to you through the volume of a topic with which you were being doused? Well, I believe God is speaking to me about not being afraid through the dousing of songs and His Word!
As I did a self-reflection, there were certainly some fear issues. Much of it was just a hesitancy to do something because of possible consequences. I had to confront that fear equals lack of faith in God!
God, help me. I know I am a worry wart, but I want to be a warrior by allowing your Spirit to live through me.
Here is the message from God.
1. I fell in love with the song, Fear is a Liar by Zach Williams. It really confronted my, while encouraging, and comforting me. Lately, I have been trying to hit fear head on. Knowing it is a LIAR!
2. I have been listing to Fearless by Jasmine Murray for about a year. However, it has come back alive for me. Isn't that our goal to be fearless? As with all tough things, we must ask God to help us.
3. I just finished reading Daniel this morning. In the latter part of the book, Daniel saw visions. These visions frightened him. But, I heard these encouraging words:
Daneil 10:9-12 (NLT); Then I heard the voice of the man speak, and when I heard the sound of his voice, I fainted and lay there with my face to the ground. Just then a hand touched me and lifted me, still trembling to my hands and knees. And the man said to me, "Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you." When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling. Then he said, "Don't be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer."
WOW! What encouraging words! I claim them for my life! We do not always see the answer to our prayer or it may be delayed. However, this does NOT mean it is not heard in heaven!
4. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT); For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
5. Since the spirit of fear is evil, I like to lean on James 4:7 (NLT); So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
In conclusion, I know I am a work in progress, but I want to seek God for the victory! In this case the victory over fear in my life.
Thank you God for pointing out this sin in my life. Now, I ask you to help me in this battle. If you need to....battle for me! In Jesus name. Amen
Amen

2018 PAYH Bike Ride
The Paul Anderson Bike Ride commemorates Paul's ride from Vidalia to Nebraska on a one-speed bike! Actually, several of them since they broke along the way. His destination was Father Flanning's Boys Town. The ride served two purposes: Paul wanted to learn why Father Flanning's program was so successful in changing troubled boys lives. It was also, a fund raiser for PAYH.
The 2018 Bike Ride serves two purposes.
The first purpose is AWARENESS of PAYH.
The Core Priorities are:
1. Planting God's Word
2. Therapeutic Counseling
3. Quality Education
4. Transition Program
The second purpose is FUND RAISING.
Please prayerfully consider, sponsoring a boy.
No donation is too small. (We know Jesus fed 5000 men, plus the women and children with 5 loaves and 2 fish.)
You may sponsor any of the 5 boys, but (hint, hint) Matt is a great choice. Ok, I am on Team Matt.
Honestly, my prayer would be you honor the Lord's guidance in giving to support PAYH, since that makes a difference in ALL the boys lives.
How do I give?
1. You can text: BIKERIDE15 to 71777.
2. You may send a check to PAYH.
P.O. Box 525
Vidalia, GA 30475
3. Call to find out if there is another way to give if you don't like option 1 or 2.
Even if you do not feel led to give financially, PLEASE PRAY FOR THE BOYS AND ADULTS THAT ARE PART OF THIS 500-MILE JOURNEY!
Thank you,
James

My Daddy (AKA Ronald); Part Six; "Conclusion"
Special Note: This has been therapeutic and fun to write this series about my daddy. I want to praise God for all fathers and especially our Heavenly Father. If you did not have (or continuing to not have) a good relationship with your father, my heart goes out to you! Even more, my prayers go out to you! This Part of the Ronald Series is a little difficult to frame. I pray it turns out well.
I was born to parents who were in their forties. Therefore, my high school years were their mid-late fifties. The age factor, plus my daddy was not nearly as strong post heart-attack one year prior to my high school career, created an often laissez faire life for me. They did not challenge me academically, and I sure wasn't going to ruin that! It's funny how those things catch up with you...like college. Many core classes were hard to me, and other students were breezing by. But, that's another story.
In ninth grade (since I had a late birthday), Ronald got to watch his son play football with the VRD Midget Varsity. We won the District and lost to Coffee County in the South Georgia Championship. My parents were always supportive in my athletic endeavors. I know they were at many games. They were probably at most games, but here's the age where my relationship with my parents was weird. Sometimes I wanted at my games, and sometimes I was glad if they didn't show up.
Those games of catch with daddy at 6:10 ceased at some point...not sure when. I was playing basketball with the guys in the neighborhood--seems like year round. But, we also played baseball, football, frisbee-golf, and all kinds-of-out-door-games. Fortunately, we did not have the great video games that are available now.As I try to remember back 40-years ago, I do not remember spending much time with daddy. My tenth-grade year major was having fun: during school, after school, and at night. My last official sports team was Pony League as a 15 year-old. Since the Babe Ruth League didn't make, the VRD allowed 15 year-olds to play with restrictions, such as maybe not being able to play the infield.
In the winter of my Junior year, my life changed. I got a job. I worked as a custodian/go-for at Sea Island Cotton Gin from that winter until right before I went to college. My boss was Mr. Cliff Davis. He was a great boss! Cliff let me increase my hours in the summer. He also, took time to show me proper selling techniques, such as keeping a display full and clean, Oh, did I say clean? Cliff kept everything neat and clean. He added much needed structure to my life. I appreciate all he did for me, and he certainly served as a strong-male role model for me.
In the last quarter of my senior year, I was one of the sorriest (as in non-productive) human beings alive! One trait I picked up was telling people I would do something, then not following through. Somehow that news got back to my daddy. He lectured me for an hour. Only those who knew him could imagine listening for an hour. It would be like the Negative of a Mike Brady talk! Yes, I was crying. At the time, I didn't like it at all. But, it was the most important hour Ronald spent with me! I NEEDED it! I never forgot the lesson: If you tell somebody you are going to do something, do it! As I look back at my life, I am grateful Ronald lived long enough to make it through my Senior year. He also hired me to deliver items to his customers. But, this had to happen on Saturday mornings, because I worked for Cliff on weekdays. This did not last long. Our relationship did not allow it. Don't get me wrong. I still loved my daddy, but we went through High School Senior/Daddy pains. To put a blanket over my behavior; I acted whacky sometimes. On more than one occasion, Daddy got mad at me. I was too big to whip, so he hauled off and hit me in the arm! HARD! It hurt. But, it got my attention (for a little while).
One demand that got under my skin was the 11:00 Curfew for the weekends. All I wanted was 11:30. "Nothing good ever happens after 11:00." REALLY?!
One of the best things that happened in my childhood was the fear I had for what my daddy might do to me if I did something wrong. I got plenty of whippings, but as I got older, I had no idea what he might do. That was a GREAT Thing! However...as a Senior, there were several times I pushed him on that 11:00 Curfew time. I don't remember anything happening---maybe a few words.
During my first quarter of college, cancer began to eat at my daddy---larynx and lungs. He was well enough that I drove him around the golf course during Thanksgiving Holidays. A few days before Christmas, he died. I was proud of his life. I missed him immediately. But, so many family members, church members, and friends poured out love.
In conclusion, daddies are really important. I am thankful for the exact one God gave me...Ronald!

My Daddy (AKA Ronald) Part Five; "Hilarious Ronald Quotes"
Special Note: Ronald did not intend for many of these quotes to be funny. It was a side-product of his personality.
The Blessing
One night as we sat at the table ready to eat supper (not dinner), Ronald attempted to say the blessing.
"Automotive Supply," is what came out. Since this was the name of his store, he had answered the phone with the store name...one too many times that day.
Driving Lessons
I have to admit I was a terrible driver, but Ronald was a far worse teacher!
As we were traveling along a road during one lesson, I undoubtedly did not have the mindset he desired. So he YELLS out, "BE CALM!" (Classic Ronald)
During another lesson, I was approaching an on coming car, as well as a pedestrian that was well off the road. For some reason, the pedestrian bothered me enough that I began to drift towards the center lane.
Daddy screams, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
Me, "I don't want to hit the man (the pedestrian)."
Daddy screams, "HIT THE MAN! DON'T HIT THE CAR! HIT THE MAN!"
I still yell that out as I approach a pedestrian.
Fortunately, there were the days that Momma gave me driving lessons. On this particular day, I was attempting to park the car (a big Oldsmobile with steering so loose that you could turn the steering wheel for days before it moved a foot---ughh). As I approach our garage, instead of hitting the brake, I hit the gas. I ran into the garage. Unfortunately, Ronald was home.
He comes running out and I don't remember what he's screaming.
I can only imagine....WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! THE WHOLE HOUSE SHOOK!!
I remember my response, "I only tapped it."
Daddy, "Yea, you tapped it with two tons!"
My Rock Music
I had a nice set up in my bedroom during high school. My own phone extension, my own T.V., and my own stereo. I loved Rock Music! To get the full effect, it has to be played somewhat loud. Right?
Well, Ronald hated the music! He was always yelling for me to turn down that music. This dude loved Lawrence Welk. When it came on at 7:00 on Saturday nights, it was weird city.
We had a few conversations about music.
"Son, all they do is sing the same words over and over."
"Oh, like they 'Swam and they swam all over the dam.'" (Yes, I busted him good on his old music.)
Daddy, "You got me there."
One of my favorite Rock Groups was KISS. I would rock my KISS shirt around in the house.
Daddy, "They are performers! They should have more clothes on!"
Come on! Maybe Peter Chris or Paul Stanley had his shirt off.
Ronald did shoot a dagger in my KISS fan club. My buddies and I each decided we would "BE" one of the band members. I was Ace Frehly.
One day, I walked up to Daddy and showed him Ace on my shirt.
I said, "That's me, Daddy Ace Frehly!"
Without hesitation, he said, "Yea, you spell it as%"
Wow! The most classic burn that Ronald ever put on me!

My Daddy (AKA Ronald); Part Four; "Playing Sports"
"What are you, a Sissy?!" Ronald asked me.....
Background: My daddy loved football. In High School, he desperately wanted to play football, but his daddy only allowed him to play his Senior year.
I am sure Ronald had dreams of my football playing career, especially once my foot developed and didn't slow me down much in sports. Sure enough, I began playing football with the VRD in 1970 when I was in the fourth grade. I was on the Gold Team, and we were not good---our 0 and 2 record to start the season proved it. We had 4 teams in our league. Vidalia's legendary football star, Johnny Taylor was tearing up the League. The VRD moved him from his first team to a second. Then, they decided to put him on our team.
The word on the street: his daddy said, "If you move him one more time, I am taking him to the house."
Well, he stayed on our team. We went from worst to first! Our Gold Team beat the White Team 36 to 6 in the Championship Game. We probably had team names, but all I remember were the colors. Also, we each got a small trophy, which I thought was the greatest thing ever! Praise God for Johnny Taylor!
I continued to play VRD football in the fifth and sixth grades. However, I decided I would not play VRD football in the seventh grade. That is when Ronald and I had a conversation.
Daddy, "When does football start?"
Me, "I am not playing this year."
Daddy, "What are you a Sissy?!"
I don't think I answered. Ronald could have some weird ideas, but I don't ever remember him saying something that made me feel awful. I sure wanted to please my daddy, but I stuck to my guns and did not play football that year.
I had no intentions of playing football in the eighth grade either. In those days, the VRD had a football team for 14 year-old-and-younger boys. It was called Midget Varsity. It was kind of like All-Stars. We were in the same District as other VRD Sports. If you won your District, you would play for the South GA Championship, with the winner playing for State. After three days of practice in the Fall of 1974, I had some friends to approach me in the hall of school about playing. At first, I resisted. I think the thing that swayed me was a name (or two) of boys that I knew I could outplay. On day four, I went out for the team. I not only made the team, but I got a semi-position at left guard. I ran in plays with another player during the games. To make a long story shorter, I played as a thirteen and fourteen year old. I never missed a practice after I went out on the fourth day when I was thirteen. I did NOT play to please my daddy, but I am sure he was proud. In the Spring of 1975, I lasted 1 day of VHS Spring Football. My football career was over, and I never talked to my daddy about it again.
Daddy and I played golf a little bit, but I never really liked the game growing up. He played it 3 times a week. Looking back, I really wished I would have played at a younger age or he would have lived long enough for us to play together as adults.

My Daddy (AKA Ronald); Part Three; "Spectating Sports"
I can't remember not loving sports. Daddy must have been the genesis of my sports-love affair. He was an avid sports enthusiast. It should come as no surprise that my first Big Sporting Event was a Braves game in 1967 when I was 5-years-old. Although we loved the Braves, Ronald's favorite baseball team in my early years were the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles were a powerhouse in the late 60s and early 70s. So much, that I thought they were our 'State Team,' and the Green Bay Packers were our 'State Football Team.' Of course, the Packers won the first two super bowls in those years.
One of the biggest highlights of watching a sporting event live, was the 1972 All-Star Baseball game held in Atlanta. Daddy and I had great seats. We were Field Level at the First Base Bag. We were probably 30-40 rows up from the field. The National League won the game 4-3 in the bottom of the tenth inning on a Joe Morgan Walk-Off-Hit! Hank Aaron hit a homer! 90% of the fans went home happy, but not Ronald and me. Since "our team," the Baltimore Orioles played in the American League, we were pulling for that league. Give me a break!
Strangely enough, we went to so many Braves' games that I lost count. Somehow, the Orioles faded and the Braves became 'my team.' I loved those games. I can remember thinking, "We have a whole hour before the game starts." It about did me in to have to wait for the first pitch. The great thing about the Braves being a terrible team were the tickets! You could walk up off the street and purchase great tickets for less than $10! It was a different time.
Ronald also instilled in me the love of Vidalia Indian Football. The first game I actually remember was the 1969 State Championship game when Vidalia defeated Lithonia by a score of 7-6. I remember Lithonia had a star on their helmet. As an eight-year-old, the uniforms were more interesting than the game itself. Our family went to most of the VHS football games for years. As a young boy, I loved playing cup football underneath the stands. We would often play the kids that were fans of the opponents' team. I am not really sure when I got old enough to actually watch the games. However, once I began watching, I must have seen hundreds of games. As a younger guy, the games meant so much to me! After all, we were a perennial powerhouse.
My sister played 3 years of VHS Basketball in the early 70s. I really enjoyed those games. Our Boys and Girls had excellent teams during that time period. For the young readers, the High School Girls game was a little different in that day. There were 6 players for each team on the court. There were 2 rovers who could go anywhere on the court. Then, there were 2 forwards who could only play on the offensive half of the court. Finally, there were 2 defenders who could only play on the defensive side of the court. My sister, Nancy, was a guard (or defender).
During the early 70s, all the state playoff games were played in the Macon Coliseum. As a kid, it was an extra-cool experience to be in that vast arena. It seemed like every year Vidalia played in Macon. After my sister graduated and I was in High School, I can remember catching rides with different people to watch the games in Macon. Yes, it was a different time...

My Daddy (AKA Ronald); Part Two "A Problem With Me Having Long Hair--REALLY!?"
My daddy was a Staff Sergeant with the Army-Air Force In WWII. I think he brought a lot of military home with him. He had a Crewcut---maybe from birth!
He hated the idea of my hair being long. My awareness of this fact came at an early age.
"You go cut that hair, or I will!" Daddy told me when I was around 6-years-old.
I have that episodic memory of looking into the mirror in my momma's bedroom--probably crying--trying to cut my bangs. (Yes, I had bangs.) When I was finished, the grownups realized that I would not have a career as a barber. To add insult to injury, since my self-haircut was so bad, I had to go to the Barber Shop to get more cut off!
It was amazing how important the length of my hair was to Ronald and me! He wanted it short and I wanted it long. It was probably the biggest issue of our relationship when I was growing up, so I guess things could have been much worse.
Speaking of trips to the barber as a youngster: I distinctly remember the barber cutting the sides of my head and trying to make sure things were straight. He told me a joke.
"There was a man trying to build a table. He kept cutting a little off one leg, and a little off another leg--to get them straight. After awhile, there were no legs." Whawawa! I busted out crying!
My daddy had a car parts store called Automotive Supply. It was located on Main Street, and I spent much of my childhood there. I even had my first paying job for my daddy when I was 11 or 12. I was so proud to ride my bike to work and get $.75/hour. My first lesson in taking the initiative came with it. Ronald would give me a list of jobs to do. When I was finished, I would sit down.
Ronald, "Why are you sitting down?"
I told him, "I am finished with the list of jobs."
Ronald, "Well don't sit down! Find something to do. Dust the parts."
After a few moments of confusion--because it wasn't on the list--I got up and dusted.
Somewhere along the way, a few of Daddy's customers started giving me a hard time about my hair being too long. FOR REAL! It got to be so embarrassing that I rarely went to the store.
Of course there were the times that Daddy would get home and wonder if he locked the store.
"Son, will you ride up to the store with me. I want to make sure I locked the door."
"Yes sir." I was glad to ride up to the store with him. But in my young mind, I did not understand how he could forget to lock the door. Ha! I don't know about you, but it hit me early in my adult life to check doors that I was not sure I locked.
There was another very important demand, besides hair, that my daddy had for me--great grades in school. I think I made all A's, except twice from K-8th grade. Great grades did not come to me easily. I really had to study. I rarely missed school. It was not that big of a problem, besides having to be there so early, but I HATED homework! I wanted to play after school, not do more of the stuff I left at 3:15! I started hating school in the sixth grade! But I had extrinsic reasons to do well.
In the eighth grade, an event changed my life. Ronald had a heart attack! It was not lethal, but it changed his perspective. He never said another word to me about grades or hair. When I entered VHS in the ninth grade, my hair got long and my grades got short. I was a terrible student in High School! After a ninth grade that saw my hair as long as it ever was, I kept it cut to a respectable length the rest of High School--but NEVER short.
As I think back on my life, there are so many ironies! I will end Part Two with the irony of the hair. Within a couple of years of Ronald's death, I got my hair cut as short as could be done with scissors. Even more ironic, is my presently shaved head!

My Daddy (AKA Ronald); Part One
PREFACE: As I get older, I realize the importance of having a father, and the blessing of having a good father. My heart goes out to those children who do not have this blessing. I praise God for surrogate parents and homes that help to be the father to these children.
It was 1961 or 1962 when my parents began taking me to Savannah every two weeks to see one of my heroes, Dr. Peterson. I had a club foot and an undeveloped heel. Dr. Peterson first used casts, then braces to correct the problem. He did a wonderful job on my foot, but he did more for my soul. I remember getting candy and a toy upon each visit. Dr. Peterson was always kind. He must have been an exceptional doctor, because Daddy was extremely pleased with him. It was no ordinary task to please my Daddy, but he certainly showed appreciation for those who hit the high watermark! I really appreciate my parents and others who took me on those journeys to Savannah. They fought the early morning sun and the late afternoon sun. I only remember it being a cool experience. Candy, toys, brick streets....what more could you ask for! Somewhere along the age of 6, my braces came off. I can remember needing high-top shoes---not always cool. As I grew, the foot and small calf were part of me. Thankfully, they didn't hold me back from anything!
In the late 60s and early 70s, my family took an annual vacation to Tybee Island for 10 days. We always stayed at "Mr. Brown's Motel." It came complete with a kitchenette. I am not sure how much of a vacation my mother had! Daddy loved to use the 8mm camera to film everything. We had plenty of footage from Tybee. Much of the time, I swam in the pool. Back in that day, a pool was cool...they were not found on every street corner. Ronald loved the Braves! We would listen to the games via radio for cheap-nightly entertainment. Oh, did I mention Ronald did NOT like to spend money?! He was El Cheapo! The money management part of his life did not rub off on me like the love of the Braves. I had no idea how terrible the team was. And didn't care! They were our state team! Other forms of entertainment on our beach trips included: going to Chus Dept. Store and going to Savannah once during the 10 days. That was the best part. We went to see the Savannah Minor League Baseball Team, shopped (very little money spent), watched a fireworks show, and went to the movie. Over the course of different years, I remember watching Big Jake and The Green Berets--2 John Wayne classics. All of these things were fun, but having my daddy there, made them special.
Growing up in the Lowe House revolved around Church, Automotive Supply (my daddy's car part store), and sports. My daddy was serious about my sister and I going to Sunday school when we were young. Saturdays included making sure the car was clean and shoes were shined. Momma taught Sunday school (sixth grade) for 30 years. Daddy religiously played golf on Sunday mornings for more than 30 years. He also played on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday afternoons. Ronald really wanted me to play golf. I tried when I was around 11 or 12, but there were 3 problems: it was very hot, it was very boring, and it messed up my baseball swing. So, my daddy summed it up accurately: You won a trophy and quit playing. (I think I got a trophy for Runner-Up in the Last Flight.) Ironically, I fell in love with the game a few years after Ronald died.
My sister and I had chores. Some of the chores I remember were: taking out the trash every day, sweeping out the garage every Saturday morning, cutting the grass, and raking leaves. Then, there were special projects like filling up all the holes in the yard with dirt. Here comes Ronald's cheapness again....we had a sorry old Sears lawn mower. If it got hot, you had to wait for it to cool off to continue. Then there was this piece-a-junk wheel barrow. The handle was broken. Try moving dirt to fill up about 30 holes with a wheel barrow with a broken handle. I know...complain, complain! Now, I am so glad that I had to do chores growing up. Hopefully, children still do them.
I want to end Part One by bragging on my daddy. He usually got home from work at 6:10. I would have the football or baseball/gloves ready (depending on the season). I know he was tired many times, but I NEVER remember him turning me down to throw in our spot in the side-yard. Those times were precious then and they are precious memories now. Good job, Ronald!

Mrs. Tense 1.6; Mrs. Tense and JoJo
"Wonder if Mrs. Tense will like my essay?" JoJo said aloud.
"Do you think it is a good essay, JoJo?" His mom asked.
"Absolutely (in his best Rocky voice)!"
"That's all that matters. and...getting an A."
"Ha! Good one, Mom."
"Son, Mrs. Tense has been a shining star in your life. She will treat you fairly."
"For sure."
SIXTH PERIOD THE NEXT DAY
"Now class, shut that talking."
The class spoke in unison, "Yes mam."
"Class, turn in your essays to the clerk at this time."
As the students walked over to the Clerk's desk, Paulie knocked the pencil off Taylor's desk.
Taylor acted like he didn't see it. However, as Paulie went back to his desk, Taylor stuck out his leg and Paulie came tumbling down.
In 2 seconds, Mrs. Tense was on the scene.
"What in the world is going on here?!"
Paulie jumped up and said, "This little punk tripped me!"
"First, do NOT call anybody punk. Now, Taylor did you trip Paulie?"
"Yes mam."
"Detention tomorrow. Sign the form on your way out."
Taylor mumbled, "you jump in a fire..."
"What did you say, Taylor?"
"Yes mam."
Mrs. Tense's focus today was Listening.
"To speak well, you must learn to listen well." Mrs. Tense explained.
She went on to ask, "Why?"
Sassy Sue said, "It's kinda like being a good writer. You also need to be a good reader."
Tense coaxed Sassy to continue, "Well, the more you read the correct method of writing, the easier it is to write well."
Tense nodded with approval. "Great answer, Sue. We could call both: Follow the Model."
"We have played Follow the Leader. This is similar. As we listen to a good speaker, we must take note of several things. Look at the board for Follow the Model. Take notes."
Follow the Model
1. Focus on the speaker with your eyes. (Keep your eye on the speaker.)
2. Focus on the speaker with your ears. (Don't just hear, listen.)
3. Take notes of important points.
4. Look for the beginning, meat of the speech, and the closing.
5. Use your learning to imitate the speaker.
Tomorrow, we have a speaker scheduled to come talk with you. Your task is to Follow the Model.
Brrrrrrrrrrrr The bell sounds to end the day.

Mrs. Tense 1.7; The Tense Love for the Braves
"Strike THREE, The Batter is out!" Ernie Johnson emphatically announced.
"The Braves get out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh!
The game remains tied 5 to 5." Skip Carey concluded.
The Tenses loved listening to the Braves on WZAT out of Smallville. They rarely missed listening, and they always took at least one trip a year to Atlanta-Fulton Co. Stadium to watch their favorite team play live. It was April 1977, every team had a clean slate and hoped to win their respective division. The Atlanta Braves had one Division Crown. That was back in 1969, but maybe this year would bring the second Division Winner to Atlanta!
Jeff Burroughs led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit. He was slower than Christmas, but he was a smart base-runner. Rod Gilbreath followed with a single.
Ernie screeched, "The Braves are in business! Two on and NOBODY out!"
Freddy Tense got so excited that he almost dropped his bowl of Briers Ice Cream.
Carol said, "Freddy, if you spill a drop of ice cream, I will pretend like I am Jeff Burroughs and your head is the BALL!"
After a moment of silence, they broke out into laughter.
About that time, Gary Matthews strolled to the plate.
He took ball one...a little low.
"Strike one. The count is even at 1 and 1," Ernie let the audience know.
Skip added, "He might want that pitch back. It was a beaut."
Skip was wrong.
"There's a drive, deep left-centerfield! That ball is...outta here! The Braves lead 10-7!" Ernie announce the homer, as only he could.
Skip peddled back, "I am glad he waited on that pitch."
The Tenses cleaned, read the paper, and ate more ice cream as the night went on. But, they had the radio loud enough to keep up with the game. The Braves hung on to win 10-9. The Tenses and thousands of Braves fans went to bed with smiles on their faces.
This could be the BRAVES' Year!

Mrs. Tense 1.5; Samson
Mrs. Tense LOVED her students. She did not always like them. Mrs. Tense was aware that many, many students disliked her. She really did not care. However, she did want the students to respect her. Mrs. Tense wanted to work her butt off to educate them. She wanted to be the students's biggest fan.
Everything was cool in the World of Tense, until you disrespected her. When that happened, you better go to church. She may have a Prayer Meeting with you prior to consequences. Mrs. Tense never intended to punish a student, but she often gave them consequences to provide an opportunity for that student to change his misbehavior in the future.
This leads us to a student named Samson. He was well named. Samson stood 6 foot, 3 inches tall. He weighed well over 300 pounds. By 1978 standards, he was HUGE! His size could be used for good or bad. 99 percent of the time, Samson used his size for the bad. He often misbehaved in class. He constantly bullied anybody and everybody. Samson only had one friend. Her name was Edith Turnbelt. The two had been friends since before Samson could remember. He was VERY protective of her. Samson was 16 years-old. His father owned a garage. This gave Samson access to smashed cars. He became quite adept at fixing them up. Samson loved muscle cars. Even at 16, Samson owned 3 cars. But, his baby was a 1973 Corvette that he had rebuilt from the ground. It was metallic green. It had 440 horses under the hood. He had put in a brand new stereo that rocked. The only problem with his car hobby was the speed he had come accustomed to driving. He had 3 speeding tickets in the last 6 months. One more and he was in trouble. When Edith asked Samson if he was scared about it, he shrugged his shoulders.
In his low voice, Samson said, "I ain't worried bout no cops!"
Edith said, "Really, Samson!?"
"Honey, I would outrun em all. I would be home playing sleep by the time they got to my house!"
Edith let out a shrill laugh.
"I ain't worried bout nothin!"
"Nothing?"
"Well, I do have to pass English this quarter. Old Lady Tense is about to get on my last nerve."
Edith exclaimed, "You aren't scared of Mrs Tense?"
"@#^%$ Nooooo!! Tomorrow during class, I am going to scare her!!"
Edith whispered, "Oh myyyy."
The next day, Samson dragged in to fifth period English class--a minute late.
Mrs. Tense HATED tardiness!
"Samson, why are you late?"
Samson looked around, took a deep breath, and said, "Your class is on my time."
Then he added, "Hon."
Mrs. Tense took a breath herself. "I see."
"Do you need to pass this class, Samson?"
"Wellllll"
"Well WHAT?"
"Yea."
"Yea? I see."
Samson smiled. "You see what?"
"I see my future."
Samson just quite did not get it...."What future?"
"First, you will address me as mam in the future. Do you want to know more about the future?"
"yes"
"Excuse me!?"
"Yes Mam."
"Today, at 3:17, I can see a room with a phone. It's a little cloudy. Wait, it is clear! It is the teacher's lounge!"
Samson's mouth was open, and the other students began to giggle.
Now, Mrs. Tense addressed the entire class. "I am sure everyone wants to know what I am seeing at 3:17 in the Teacher's Lounge."
Several students said, "Yes mam!"
"I see a phone. Oh my, there is a hand dialing a number."
One student said, "Did somebody pick up on the other end?"
"Yes, I can hear a Voice....it is saying RALPH'S GARAGE. RALPH SPEAKING."
Samson failed to remember that he was scared of one person in the world...his daddy--Ralph.
He burst out, "Mrs. Tense, please tell me what I need to do---so you can see a different future!"
The students died laughing!
Mrs. Tense simply said, "I think it is time to get back to the present."
Samson sat like an angel for the remainder of the class period.

"Yea?

Mrs. Tense 1.4; Back to Reality
It was April 10, 1978...a Monday. But not just any Monday. It was the Monday following the 2 days of Spring Break.
NOTE: In 1978, there were only 2 days of holidays between Christmas Holidays and Summer Break, which came in June. The 2 precious days were Spring Break!
Mrs. Tense was unusually grumpy...
First period, she gave the students an assignment. If anybody ask a question, she grunted--hoping nobody had the guts to ask her to repeat her answer. She got her wish!
Second period, she had advanced to a low talk for an answer. The first two students to ask her to repeat the answer were awoken with a yell. Nobody asked her any more questions that period.
Ahh, the 10:10 Break! Welcomed by everyone, especially on this day back from Paradise.
Mrs. Tense and her teaching buddy, Mrs. Square Dress, loved this time of the day. They took turns using each other's classroom for their break. The consistent part of the break was the snack: a pack of peanuts and a Tab to wash them down. The ladies would share stories and laugh. It wa so wonderful to have adult contact.
Brrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! The 10:20 End-the-Break Bell went off.
All parties scrambled to their third period class.
Third period, found Mrs. Tense and most students more awake. She decided to play the game: Write, read, and share.
The game consisted of the student writing about a given topic. Next, the student read a partner's story (either by choice or at random...Mrs. Tense mixed things up). Finally, the student would share the answers to the following questions with their partner.
1. Rate the beginning (or hook) on a scale of 1 to 10. The partner could ask for verification of the rating.
2. Tell the most-liked content. The partner could ask for verification.
3. Share any unclear parts of the writing. The partner could ask for further explanation.
4. Rate the conclusion (or finish) of the writing. The partner could ask for clarification.
At Mrs. Tense's discretion, she would call time. The students would return to their own seats. Then, Mrs. Tense would ask for volunteers that believed their partner's writing was worthy of sharing with the class. Mrs. Tense would usually allow 3 to 5 students to share.
The topic: If you could be an animal, which one would you choose. Why?
Today, many of the students struggled to write anything, but not Dorothea Davis. She was wide awake--fresh off reading 5 books during her precious four-day weekend break. Dorothea's favorite class was English, and it showed. Mrs. Tense had allowed the students to choose their partners this day. (She was pretty apathetic about the entire day.) Dorothea and Marty paired up. Marty also loved English, and the two always paired up if they were given a choice. Sure enough, when Mrs. Tense ask for students to volunteer their partner, Marty raised his hand.
Marty exclaimed, "Dorothea has out done herself today."
Some of the students groaned.
Mike said, "Do you have to be so LOUD, dude?"
Mrs. Tense asked Dorothea to come to the front of the class to share.
Dorothea enthusiastically began, "If I were an animal, I would be a bird. Migrating would be my favorite time of the year. My wings would allow me to soar to new region after new region. I would stop and eat the food provided by God. When full, my buddies and I would take off. There would be times we would stop overnight. Usually, the next morning would find us up at daybreak searching for the proverbial worm! We often played for awhile prior to scooting off to our next stop. Also, I would love to be a mother-bird. I would find food, then vomit it in my little chicks' mouths. (At this point, some students almost gagged themselves.) I confess there would be ONE serious problem! Due to mother nature's desire to protect me, I would be a boring earth color, while my husband would be a beautiful, vibrant color. Thank you."
As Dorothea sat down, two people clapped, while several students looked at her like they could vomit in her mouth!
Mrs. Tense simply said, "Wonderful Dorothea!"
More volunteers shared....
By 3:15, Mrs. Tense was elated. She always did school work at school and home. However, today was different. She left at 3:17 with no papers. The day after Spring Break was like no other. Freddy would be taking her out to eat tonight, and he better like it!

Mrs. Tense 1.3; WORK, WORK ,WORK
The average Joe has no idea how much teachers work. Some people say, 'They have summers off.'
But, the teachers need the summer to recover from dealing with students, parents, and the pressure of their job. However, almost all the teachers at Smallville High loved their job. Mrs. Tense was one of the most.
Mrs. Tense loved to grade 'English Papers.' This would include first drafts, second drafts, tenth drafts, and completed papers. She spent about $12 per year on red pens. These were her swords for cutting the students' writing. Mrs. Tense would even take the papers to bed for grading prior to going to sleep. Her husband, Freddy did not understand the need to grade for hours But, Mrs. Tense told Freddy she would be drowning in papers if she didn't keep up. (That happened in 1973 when Mrs. Tense got the Whooping Cough.)
Tuesday morning was Mrs. Tense's favorite time of the week! Freddy actually took her to breakfast at McDonalds. She drank sooooo much coffee that she was hyper all day. Maybe that is why Mrs. Tense made Tuesdays into a special day called: Share Fair. The students thought it was THE corniest name in the world. It simply meant the students would share their writing drafts with the class. Most of the time, Mrs. Tense picked the best drafts to be shared. Other times, she accepted volunteers. Then, there were the days she grabbed a name out of the hat. Most students hated those days. Many students didn't write well. While even less liked to share with the class.
Just like clockwork, Mrs. Tense punched in at 7:40. As she got ready for the day, she wrote on her blackboard in big letters: SHARE FAIR. Her first period students came in with several moans. Even though this practice was weekly, there were many students who appeared to have no idea about it. Mrs. Tense called them the Twilighters after the show, The Twilight Zone. Patsy, the Class Clerk, passed out the students' rough drafts. Mrs. Tense had pretty well inked-up most of them.
Mrs. Tense began class, "Students, take out your handouts from yesterday that contained the 3 Writing Prompts. Let's read these as a reminder. Butch, #1.
"You are approached by a Senior to buy some weed. What do you do? Use dialogue."
Mrs. Tense barked out, "Suzie Q, read #2."
"Your father allows you to choose the family vacation. Explain in detail the vacation you and your family go on."
Mrs. Tense said, "Thank You. Tom, take #3."
Tom cleared his throat, and used his deep voice, "IF YOU WERE THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU MAKE?"
Several students laughed. Mrs. Tense used her deep voice, "THANK YOU!"
The students cackled.
"It was interesting to me that 75% of you chose the first prompt. 23% chose the second prompt. And, one student--Bsocefiuos chose the third prompt. I will allow the best of each prompt to share. If your paper looks like somebody bled on it, you will NOT be sharing.
Eddie Van Ripple was chosen by Mrs. Tense for his good work on the first prompt.
"Yo, Ed!"
"Hey Jerome."
"How ya feeling?"
"Little tired."
"Well how would you, my man, like to feel better?"
"Uhhh. How?"
"Simple, EdDEE. Smoke your way to High Land. The Mountains, Baby!"
"Are you talking about getting high?"
"Uh, yea. For the low, low price of $5."
"Listen, Jerome, if you want to do that, I don't mind. But, it's not for me, Pal."
"I see. There is one thing to remember. If anybody--I mean a-n-y-b-o-d-y says you told them about Jerome's little store, Lights Out for EDEE!"
"I am not a snitch, Jerome. See ya, man."
THE CLASS CLAPPED.
Mrs. Tense thanked Eddie. She called on Patsy for the next prompt.
Frank coughed out, "Teacher's pet," from the back of the room. Patsy gave the fish eye to Frank, and many of the students let out an oooooooooo.
Patsy smiled like she was on a Dentist Commercial. She talked like she was your best friend, who really wasn't your best friend (backstabbing voice).
"My family would go to the Amusement Park called Treasure Island. As the father of 4 kids: 2 years old, 7, 10, and 15----this would provide variety at a cheap price. Plus, I could sit in a lounge chair by the pool all day. When my wife asked me to do something, I was just pretend-sleep. HuuHuuHuu (Patsy used a man voice for the laugh.)
That night, we would go to Pizza Hut, and pig out.
Finally, we would hit the Putt-Putt course."
Patsy said down. Nobody clapped. Their mouths were open at the lame vacation Patsy chose. Many of the students were thinking their vacation was better than that.
On cue (as if she could read minds), Mrs. Tense said, "Oh, many of you are thinking, 'My vacation plans are better.'" Several students nodded.
Mrs. Tense continued to explain, "HOWEVER, your drafts were NOT written as well."
Mrs. Tense cleared her throat, "Bsocefiuos, since you were the only student to write on the last prompt, the floor is yours."
Bsocefiuos, the most self-unaware person in the room, jumped up and began talking.
"Alright! Thanks, Mrs. Tense! Hi there ladies and boys. Sit back and listen and enjoy."
"If I were the principal, school would be kinda optional. I mean, you gotta come some, but heck--not all the time. Hah! You could choose 3 Electives and 3 serious classes per quarter. 60 is passing. I would institute a policy called teacher-student confidence. If ya parent wants to know anything about school--specially yo grade---the school can't tell em!! HaHa! The teachers took a hypocritical oath! Finally, McDonald's would set up shop in our lunchroom. I would order a Big Mac, fries, and coke EVERY day! We would have the best tooting school in the universe. Thank you very much!"
Bsocefiuos sat down proudly.
Mrs. Tense simply said, "That was atrocious."

LISTEN (A Sunday school lesson: Seeking God and self-honesty)
LISTEN
James 1:19 (NLT) Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: you must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
Does anyone find this verse difficult with which to comply?
2. “Listening doesn’t happen by default; it happens by design.” (1)
What does this mean?
3. An axiom of Mark Batterson has been helpful to me. It is as follows:
“Change of pace + Change of place = Change of perspective (2)
Has anyone found that to be true? Share.
Dr. Wayne Williams example
4. Confessions for not wanting to listen to God.
What God might say.
He is All-Powerful God.
What if I don’t hear anything?
What if I hear a message, but I don’t know if it is from God?
I am scared that you are not pleased with me, and your voice may not be pleasant.
I might need to change after hearing from God.
God may ask me to do something that I really do not want to do.
Do you have others?
5. Answers
I realized that I was being self-centered minded instead of Kingdom-minded.
I am not loving God like I should. This thinking show lack of trust and lack of obedience for God.
I am not loving people like I should. In order to be the me God wants me to be, I must allow Him to guide me. This will help me to help others.
I desperately want more of God in my life.
Do you have others?
6. Scriptures to help Guide us.
Psalm 46:10a
Psalm 37:23
Romans 8:28
Others?
7. How can I enhance my ability to hear God?(3)
Find a place of quiet.
Carve out the time. (This will not happen by accident.)
We must WANT to hear from God.
We must listen.
Others?
8. How does God speak to us?
Through His word
Through others
Impressions deep in our soul
Circumstances
Others?
9. Final Verses
Matthew 6:33
Hebrews 12:2
10. Other questions, answers, thought, scriptures, or aides to help us listen to God?
